God Save Us Allby R.K. Campbell March 11, 2007 Surely, the man said, we must stick together or hang separately. I learned something about my fellow man during these last fifty years and often find myself praying for America. While you may not pray or attend church as is your right you may find that the oldster church is nicer than the nicest prison or hospital. Just a thought. I have seen some discussion of our current enemy and those who are evidently unrooted in American culture and ignorant of radical Muslim culture state that we may find embassy in 'family' values. It is true that family values in certain nations have changed little in 1,000 years. Veil your wife and cane your child and see how far it goes. The emergence of the contemporary left during the 1960s seems to find union with the enemy in that each hates America to one extent or the other. While some claim the war is not racial, hatred of Jews is something that binds many together world wide. At the same time, we are told that it is not a racial but a political problem we face. That may be true but I dare say we could live with some of the classic liberal beliefs and understand a balance in society far better than we could revert to rule by royalty and see most of our population in slavery. We have a voice in our government, therefore we need not resort to terrorism; but the terrorist, by definition a person who uses terror to further political aims, seems not to understand or admire this facet of American society. Rather, he sees it as a weakness. The classic liberal belief in individual freedom and equality of law is something we all should adhere to. Feminism and egalitarianism may not appeal to all citizens, but certainly in a free society such beliefs will exist. The disputes between the right and left are over rival conceptions, not the basis of equality and freedom, or at least they should be (we at Gunblast believe gun rights are the most credible measure of a nation's freedom.) There are some who would rather see America defeated than be successful simply to spite the President. As for the right, do you really believe gay marriage or atheism poses as real a threat as radical Islamic terrorists? In America we must all agree to disagree but we need to hold firmly to our common ground. Honest disagreement is a healthy measure of democracy. On the other hand some of our modern politicians are much the same as the Copperheads who once assailed President Lincoln. As casualties mounted during the War Between the States, the Copperheads tried in every way to defeat the President on his home ground. Many went so far as to travel to Canada and meet with Confederate representatives. This type of extreme antagonism was short-sighted and treasonous. What type of nation would have emerged had Lincoln and the loyal Senators and Congressmen nor persevered? Some have high ideals while others have had their morals weakened by economic desire and ago. In America there is little chance that domestic policy differences will degenerate into a civil war. But we can reach an impasse of ineffective government. America should be a model of pluralism and tolerance, and use rhetoric rather than misrepresentation to solve disagreements. After years of diplomacy in which we have thrown carrots and sticks to the Arab world, Americans should not be credulous and ignorant in their dealings. This is the global media age, and sensational reporting is the rule. The media seldom show the hypocrisy and evil of even moderate regimes. I am not making light of any issue. Some that what we debate in America are important issues that strike a chord of dissent with my faith. But I am not going to be dragged into any such issue in this forum. My point is, we are all Americans and we must continue to debate among ourselves. To see allies among our adversaries is despicable. And we truly need to understand that the present conflict is not ideological but a matter of life and death. These lines are dedicated to Emily Campbell and the crew at Mortarritaville, Iraq. We love you Emily--- R.K. Campbell
