"SINGLE-SIXES IN TRANSITION" by Jim Schafer

Won the "Second Place Advanced Class" Award

This display exhibits fine examples of the changes that Ruger made to the Single-Sixes during mid-1962 until late 1963.  These changes are the XR3 grip frame to the XR3-RED grip frame, steel ejector rod housings to aluminum housings, stamped numbers on the extra "convertible" cylinder to electric pencil "scratched" numbers, and the small 1/16" serial number changed to the larger 1/8 numbers.  This display included 17 of the known 19 variations.  Of the two not displayed only one of each is known to exist...but Jim has not given up, he's still looking.  The display included a complete parts breakdown, various boxes with some very rare, instruction manuals, warranty cards, and other supporting memorabilia.

"THE BEGINNING OF HISTORY" by Tyrone Philips

Won the "First Place Intermediate Class" Award.

This display highlighted accomplishments of Bill Ruger and Alex Sturm just before and after Sturm, Ruger, and Co. was formed.  Examples of each one's work before the company was formed were displayed...a rare Bill Ruger straight-handle drill and Alex Sturm's rare children's book entitled "The Problem Fox".  The center piece of this unique display was an early Ruger Standard "Red Eagle" .22 pistol, the results of the combined efforts of these two famous men.  The true beginning of History!!

Ed. Note: Phillips' exhibit proves that an effective (and prize-winning) display does not have to be built around a large number of rare and expensive guns. Imagination, research and passion for the subject matter combine to create an impressive and educational exhibit.
