About 5 years ago, Gunblast.com launched a “limited edition” safe model with Heritage Safe Company.  This program was a success for Heritage and provided high-quality safes at a good price with the special Gunblast.com features to Gunblast.com readers all over the country.  After a few years, however, recognizing that there was nothing spectacular to separate the Heritage Gunblast model from a lot of other high-quality safes on the market, we at Gunblast.com began to look for more innovation from within the safe industry.  Guns were evolving with new materials, designs, weights, configurations, and calibers.  Optics were evolving with new features, advanced technology, and even lower prices.  Holsters were being made with special features for particular applications.  Knives had become “cutting edge” (forgive the pun).  However, for the most part, the safe industry had little innovation.  Some boxes were better than others.  Some offered a few more features, new colors, new interior materials.  Some came with dehumidifiers and lights.  Some allowed for more storage than others.  But, they were still basically big boxes in which to store, protect, and safeguard your gun collection.

Until Bruce Pendleton’s safe design hit the market.  This changed everything.

Before you go through all the safe details below, you might be asking, “How can I order one of these Gunblast.com Limited Edition Safes?”.  Read the rest of the article and find the ordering information at the bottom for the exclusive Gunblast.com Limited Edition Series, or click here to go directly to the part about ordering.

History

I first became aware of the Pendleton design about two years ago.  Bruce Pendleton was at the SHOT Show in 2009 and had a small booth in the back of the show where a lot of the new products were featured.  He had one safe on display.  It wasn’t finished that nicely, and still had some bugs to work out, and wasn’t even in production.  However, Bruce’s design would revolutionize the industry.  Bruce saw that, and I saw that.

I, and many others that saw his prototype, encouraged Bruce to move it forward.  I saw Bruce again at the NRA Show that year, and he was making progress.  Then, at the SHOT Show this January, Bruce had a larger booth, several samples, a perfected design, and manufacturing capabilities unparalleled.  He was finally ready to launch what would be the finest new product to come out of the personal safe industry.  Pendleton Valuables Management System was about to change the way we looked at gun safes in the future.

Because of the encouragement I had given Bruce early on, and because of the reputation of Gunblast.com, we quickly formed an alliance.  We wanted to obtain some of his safes to test and use.  And, he wanted the exposure that can come through Gunblast.com better than any other source in the firearms industry.  And, since we had discontinued the “Gunblast.com Limited Edition Series” with Heritage, this was a tremendous opportunity to provide our readers with the finest safe product on the market, emblazoned with the Gunblast.com logo, designed specifically for the Gunblast.com reader.  A new “Gunblast.com Limited Edition Series” was formed.  And now, after months of development, we are pleased to launch this product to our readers.

First, let’s talk a bit more about the Pendleton safe itself, and the features that make it unique.  I won’t go into a lot of detail, as my brother Jeff covered this exceptionally well in an article several months ago.  For technical information beyond what I intend to discuss here, go review this article again.

Made in America

Pendleton safes are made in the USA.  I consider this a quality that cannot be overlooked.  While we are overcrowded with imported products, it is more difficult to find the quality that can only come from something proudly made in the USA.  As a patriotic American, I think this is something we should count on more often.  Given the choice of buying a product made here, or something made overseas, I encourage you to “buy American”.

Quality Construction

Pendleton safes are made with 100% steel construction.  Their rectangular bar stock is stronger than the typical round bar stock utilized in most safes, as it simply provides more surface area.  If someone is trying to break into a safe by cutting through the bars, you want the most surface area possible.  Rectangular bar stock simply provides more surface area than most round bar stock.

Pendleton safes are manufactured within the same factory that makes bank safes.  No other gun safe company in America that I know of can make this claim.  Bank safes are designed with the maximum security of bank assets in mind.  They are designed for maximum protection.  The Pendleton safes are built with the same high degree of quality, with the same quality control, and with the same engineering , in the same factory in South Carolina, to insure that, for the product they represent, they are superior to their competition.  Speaking of engineering, the two lead engineers for Pendleton Safe have more than 40 years experience in safe design.  This high-tech factory is ISO9001 certified, meaning that they must adhere by a very strict set of rules for quality and manufacturing standards.   These are the same quality control standards as used in the automotive and aerospace industries.  This quality and advanced technology from the banking industry has moved into the personal gun safe industry by Pendleton Safe Company.

We’ve been working with Bruce and Gordon Pendleton for several months now.  We believe their philosophy is similar to that of Gunblast.com.  We both believe an informed customer is a happy customer.  Gunblast.com started to tell the truth about products in the gun industry, and Bruce Pendleton believes that proper information is the best process for gaining and keeping happy customers.  When armed with facts, we both believe the buyer can make the best decisions about what products will be the best fit for their needs and provide the most value over time.

Fire Rating

The information below is specific and science-based information provided me by Gordon Pendleton.  I’m not a safe expert, and neither are most of you.  So, to get to the real nuts and bolts as to how to properly evaluate the fire rating of a gun safe, I wanted to get factual information as to how safes are rated, how these ratings compare, and whether there are any industry standards out there.  The information below, while a bit scientific, makes perfect sense.  Thanks to Gordon for educating me where I could pass this same information along to our Gunblast.com reader.

Most mid to upper level safe companies boast impressive-sounding fire ratings that ensure protection for (X) amount of time with (Y) outside temperature, not to exceed 350 degrees inside the safe. However, these ratings are often deceiving due to the methods by which the safes are tested. As it stands, according to what I can find, there is no standard set of tests specifically designed for evaluating the fire resistance of a gun safe.  In fact, most companies use different private testing organizations to evaluate and assign fire ratings to their safes. These testing procedures often vary, and are exclusively based on how well paper documents resist damage as ambient temperatures rise. The problem with this approach is that most people incorrectly assume that paper in a safe will burn before a gun. This is not true. Since steel and other metals "gather heat" much more easily than paper, guns and other valuables will heat up more quickly and reach higher temperatures than paper documents in the same amount of time. You might notice this principle the next time you go outside to pickup the newspaper from your driveway on a hot summer day. While the hood of your car is too hot to touch, you can easily pick up the paper and carry it inside without any discomfort. It seems to go against logic, but it can all be explained by the scientific principle of Specific Heat Capacity.

When a safe is in a house fire, it acts like a huge convection oven – the fire outside the safe heats up the air inside the safe which by convection, transfers heat to the firearms and valuables stored in the safe. How quickly your valuables become damaged by the fire depends on three things – the temperature inside the safe, the burning or melting point of the various materials that make up your valuables, and the specific heat capacity of those materials. Specific heat capacity is the amount of heat required to change the temperature of one kilogram of a substance by one degree. In other words, the higher a material's specific heat capacity, the more heat energy is required to raise the temperature of that material. Specific heat capacity is extremely important when taking into consideration the fire-rating of a safe. The paper document used in a typical fire-testing procedure has a specific heat capacity of 1.4 (Kcal/Kg °C) and an ignition point of 451°F. By comparison, aluminum, steel, gold and silver have much lower specific heat capacities of 0.91, 0.49, 0.13 and 0.23 respectively. This means that the steel barrel of your rifle or aluminum casing of your scope will heat up a lot more quickly and easily than any paper document in the safe. With an ABS plastic gun stock melting at 221°F and wood solids starting to break down at around 575°F, you can image how quickly a gun can become ruined under heat conditions that would cause little, if any damage to a paper document in the same safe. If companies began fire-testing their safes using guns and other valuables as the standard, rather than documents, they would find that conventional fireproofing does little to prevent the safe's contents from being quickly destroyed by a typical house fire.

So, I asked Bruce and Gordon Pendleton how Pendleton Safe Company handles this issue.  First, their safes are as protected as most others on the market in terms of fire protection.  Secondly, instead of installing very costly additional fireproofing to offset the specific heat capacity issue, they handle it through one of the best warranties in the business.  Instead of irrelevant document tests that don’t relate to firearms and most other valuables, they offer to pay the damages with cold hard cash.  Pendleton Safe Company will pay up to $50,000 toward the cost of replacing any personal property stored and secured in a Pendleton Safe that becomes damaged by fire, a promise only Pendleton is willing to make.

Design Superiority

Outside of safety and security, Pendleton Safes have the most unique design on the market, truly setting them apart from all other competitors.  All but one model of Pendleton safes are round. This unique design feature highlights their rotary shelving design.  This round configuration will fit practically anywhere, and hold more guns in much less floor space.  The lower end of the Pendleton line, the Knight series, is square, but Knights still contain the innovative revolving interior design.  The Bishop and King models are round.  It takes much more engineering and work to make a round safe, but Pendleton has delivered.

Pendleton safe interiors truly set them apart.  The shelving design rotates where any gun can be easily found and taken out of the safe.  Gone are the days of moving a dozen guns to get to the one you want in the back of the safe.  A rotation of a knob manually, or on the electronic models, a flip of a toggle switch, and your selected gun comes right to you.  Simple, effective, practical gun storage.

As a bonus, some Pendleton safes have a “Lazy Susan” top that rotates with the interior.  For people that store items on top of their safes, this allows the same ease of access with items on top of your safe as it does items that are in your safe.  Truly ingenious.

Additionally, a Pendleton safe contains no carpet.  This is truly unique in design.  Replacing carpet that holds moisture with bright white metal shelving with rubber grommets for protection was a brilliant idea.  The white interior allows you to see your guns much more easily.  And, moisture retention is minimized.  So much so that, in most conditions, a dehumidifier is not necessary (but provided nonetheless in the higher-end models, and as an option to all but one safe series).

Also, in the larger electric models, over 400 bright LED lights make your gun collection sparkle.  With the bright white interior, and the lighting, it is very easy to find the gun you are looking for, even in a very large collection. And, once you find it, a flip of a toggle brings the gun right to you.

Pendleton safes contain S&G electronic locking systems, 3 and 5 spoke plated handles, a myriad of configuration designs, manual or electronic control, moisture control systems, and LED locked indicator light (in the electronic models).  They also come in a variety of exterior finishes, including automotive finishes in the King and Bishop series (black, forest green, burgundy, and even custom finishes), and several textured and PPS coatings for the ultimate in exterior finish protection.

A bit more about configuration options.  While most safes offer a few interior configuration options, Pendleton offers more choices than you can count.  Each shelf is actually a split shelf design, so each shelf is two pieces.  Each piece or half can be configured differently.  In the 32x72 Bishop or King, for example, the bottom can be fixed to hold the buttstock of long guns, or can be configured in a pistol-only configuration (more on that in a bit).   Four bottom turret shelf options, plus the pistol option, are available.  The next index shelving options consist of 6 choices, and the combinations within these choices are many.  You can opt for a smooth storage shelf, or a half smooth shelf with 4-pistol/long gun configuration, or a 4-pistol with storage and a 9-pistol half, or a 3 long gun shelf with a 4 pistol/storage, or other options between these choices.  On the next index shelving level, you can opt for combinations between storage, 4-pistol and storage, or 9-pistol halves.  On the next level of index storage, you can opt for a smooth storage shelf, 4-pistol and storage, 9-pistol, or a combination of these half shelf designs.

For handle configurations, one can opt for a painted black standard handle, a chrome handle, 4 different finish options on 3-spoke handles, 2 different finish options on 5-spoke standard handles, and 2 different finish options (black or chrome) on their unique “bullet” spoke design (actually mimics a 50 caliber cartridge).

Locking configurations include mechanical locks in black or chrome, mechanical key locks, electronic turn locks, electronic single battery keypad, electronic dual battery keypad, and electronic biometric keypad locks (electronic units are high quality Sargent & Greenleaf locks).

Security

Pendleton safes are not only beautiful and very practical, but are very secure.

Gunblast.com, the leading gun test publication, paper or online, had planned to take one of the Pendleton safes and break into it.  We had seen videos on the Internet of people breaking into leading safes from other manufacturers.  Most high-quality safes on the market were broken into within 2 minutes or less.  We at Gunblast figured that we could do the same with a Pendleton safe.  Fortunately for us, another testing group, Outtech, an outdoor products sales company from Aurora, Ohio, had beat us to the punch and had actually videotaped some dozen big guys trying to break into a Pendleton safe.  This video is on the Pendleton safe website, www.pendletonsafes.com.  Outtech’s video shows that, after 12 minutes and 45 seconds, using a dozen big guys with mauls, picks, pry bars, sledgehammers, axes, screwdrivers, etc., they still could not break into a Pendleton safe.  The manager of Outtech stated on video that most safes could be broken into by their team within 1.5 (one and one half) minutes.  After almost 13 minutes and counting, they still couldn’t break into a Pendleton safe.  He summarized by making the following statement, “Pendleton safes are the best gun safes in the world, bar none.”  I don’t think we can improve on Outtech’s break-in test, or make a comment any better than they made here.  Watch the video and see for yourself; it is truly impressive.

Configurations

We, the Gunblast.com brothers, each ordered safes, configured the way we wanted them (with Boge opting for something so different that it prompted an entire new line for Pendleton), and delivered to our door by our friend Mike Harrison at Glover’s Lock & Key in Clarksville, Tennessee.  Jeff got a forest green King series configured for long-guns and handguns.  I got a burgundy King series safe with a configuration to satisfy my collection of very long-barreled shotguns as well as room for long rifles, pistols and storage.  Boge, always being different, and being a handgun collector, opted for something that created a new model as mentioned, a handgun-only safe finished in an automotive black paint.

The Pistol Safe of Pendleton, dubbed the “Boge Quinn Pistolero” Model in the Gunblast.com Limited Edition Series, holds 144 handguns (yes, 144) in the King 3272 series, and 72 in the Bishop 3260 series, plus an extra storage shelf for magazines, ammo, extra cylinders, etc.  For the pistol collector like Boge, I have seen no other safe on the market that provides more protection, that holds more pistols, and that does so with ease of use, protection of the product, and beauty than the Pendleton/Gunblast.com “Pistolero” models.  This special product can be ordered in the Bishop series as the 3260 Bishop Pistol BP-GLE in a textured finish, or the top-line 3272 King Pistol KP-GLE in automotive finishes.  GLE stands for “Gunblast Limited Edition” series models.

The GLE, or “Gunblast Limited Edition” models from Pendleton contain the unique features of all Pendleton safes, plus special features found only on the Gunblast.com safes.  Bruce Pendleton and I have been through the Pendleton products and have specifically designed safe configurations and models for the Gunblast.com reader.  These represent the finest safes on the market for the serious gun collector, or the gun owner who simply wants to protect the guns he has in the best manner.  All GLE series safes include many interior configuration options, locking options, handle options, and finish options.  The GLE series safes contain fixed location shelving (vertically; the split design function of the shelf itself remains of course); adjustable collars are available as an extra-cost option.  Plus, they feature the Gunblast.com logo on the exterior of the safe, and specific Gunblast serial number series.  Additionally, we have negotiated the best pricing of these products on the market, generated through the buying power of Gunblast.com for our readers.  With more than 800,000 monthly readers, Gunblast.com was able to negotiate special pricing not available through any other source on these high-quality Pendleton GLE series safes.  The GLE series safes are not available anywhere other than through the relationship established through Gunblast.com.  We at Gunblast.com are not selling these safes; we don’t sell products.  However, we have worked with Pendleton in design, have lent our logo, and have placed our stamp of approval on these products.  The end result is what we consider the finest gun safe on the market, with more innovative features than any other we have seen, delivered to the Gunblast.com reader at a very attractive price.

All GLE series safes (Gunblast Limited Edition) are exclusive to Gunblast.com, yet have all the regular Pendleton features, plus some.  And, as indicated, our pricing is better.  All GLE series safes are sold in sizes ranging from 2860 (28” wide by 60” tall) to 3272 (32” wide by 72” tall).  I’d recommend that, if your floor space allows, opt for the 32” models, as you get almost double the storage capacity for only $150-$250 more.  And, the taller models (72”) provide an extra shelf unit inside, again for not a lot of cost increase.  For sizing, the depth is roughly 2.5” deeper than the width (less handle).  The handle is approximately 3” deep.  So, if you order a 30” safe, the width is 30” and the depth with handle is approximately 35.5”.  A 32” wide safe is approximately 37.5” deep.  Keep this in mind as you order.  Also, note that the lock indicator light is only available with the electronic lock.  Additionally, the textured and PPS exterior finishes available on all models (no extra cost on Knight and Bishop) are very durable, scratch-resistant coatings.  While not as pretty as the automotive paint finishes, the textured and PPS finishes are extremely tough.

The GLE series of safes from Pendleton are as follows:

Knight 2872GLE

Knight 2860GLE

Knight 3272GLE

Knight 3260GLE

Bishop 3060GLE

KNIGHT GLE series

All Knight series Pendleton safes are the typical square box shape outside.  From the exterior, they look like most other high-quality gun safes on the market.  However, when you open the door, the differences are very evident.  The Knight series have the same revolving interior shelving as do the round Bishop and King series safes.  Since they are round inside within a rectangular box, they receive an additional feature of two interior steel storage fixed shelves, one along each side of the safe.  Each of these fixed shelf units contain 7 shelves per side, or 14 total.  These are great to store ammo, holsters, or other items not stored on the revolving shelves. And, like all GLE series, they include the Gunblast.com logo and special serial number identification.

HOW TO ORDER

Gunblast.com has arranged for Pendleton Safe to handle orders through a designated marketing company for the Gunblast Limited Edition series safes.  Gunblast.com doesn’t sell anything as you know.  However, through our large readership buying power, we are lending our logo to these unique safes and have worked with Bruce Pendleton to insure ease in ordering and delivery to Gunblast.com readers.  Therefore, the dealer markups for the GLE series are eliminated, passing the savings on to the Gunblast.com reader.  As Gunblast.com sells no products, we have arranged this relationship with Pendleton through a designated marketing organization in order to provide our readers with the finest gun safe products on the market at the best available prices.

To order, email gunblastsafe@pendletonsafe.com.  Bruce Pendleton himself may take your order, or if not, one of the marketing company representatives will assist you.  Or, you can call Pendleton Safe direct at 770-466-6181 to ask questions or place your order via phone.  Note that there are various shelf configuration options available, as well as locks, handles, and finishes, and the Pendleton representative will help you determine which are the best options for you.  When you email or call, make sure you indicate that Gunblast sent you, and provide the model numbers as indicated above (including the GLE designation as these are exclusive for our Gunblast.com readers).  If you have questions, then pop an email over with your phone number, and Bruce or one of his team will give you a call to help you with your order, or call and ask.  They accept all standard forms of payment.

Gunblast.com handles probably more guns than most any of our readers.  We need safe and convenient storage options for our test guns, as well as our personal collections.  We have gun safes within our test facilities, as well as in our business office and our personal homes.  We have seen practically every gun safe on the market, and could obtain any we choose.  We believe that Pendleton gun safes are the finest available, and that is why we give them such a high endorsement.  My brother Jeff, who as you know is very opinionated and outspoken, has stated that he will never buy another safe but Pendleton.  If the Pendleton safe is good enough for Gunblast.com, then perhaps you will find that the Pendleton GLE series safes are the best choice for you and your family as well.

The beautiful automotive-grade finishes on the Pendleton King model safes (as well as the new Gunblast.com editions) are very deep and highly reflective, as can be seen in this photo.  Not only is the photographer captured in the reflections off the mirror-like finish, but also the adjoining shelving containing ammunition.  Note how little space the swing-away door takes, along with the thickness of door metal, the thick bar stock bolts, the exceptional S&G electronic locks, and the optional 50-caliber bullet handle.

Another photo showing the deep finish of the Pendleton King model gun safes. Note how the round configuration can fit about anywhere.

All Pendleton gun safes are proudly build in the USA.

Each Pendleton gun safe comes with a lifetime warranty, posted right inside the door.  Note that each gun safe also features a $50,000 fire insurance policy; you will not find better protection from a gun safe manufacturer. These are the most feature-rich, most user-friendly, best warranted, and finest quality gun safes on the market today.

All Pendleton Gunblast.com series, King series, and Bishop series gun safes are round, so they easily fit practically any space, even tight corners. Note how the beautiful burgundy Pendleton King safe brightens up Greg's gun room.

While the outside is beautiful and tough, the inside of the Pendleton gun safes set the apart from all competition.  The rounded rotating shelving allows for more guns in less floor space, plus much easier access.  Note that most of the guns were removed from these photos in order to show more open space and the holes for the guns.

A closer shot of the interior in the large King and Gunblast.com series Pendleton safes.  Just a few guns were left inside before taking these photos in order to feature the openness and configuration capabilities of these modular shelving units, something truly unique in the gun safe industry.

Note the second shelf cut-outs allow for very long-barreled rifles and shotguns to be easily placed (and retrieved) from the Pendleton safes.

Greg's Pendleton safe features a second-from-top shelf configuration that allows space for pistols and revolvers.  Note the shelves below feature long-barrel cut-outs, something Greg wanted for his long-barreled shotgun collection.  The guns in the photo are a 1957 Ruger Blackhawk, a Charter Arms Gunblast.com "Gunblaster" series in 44 Special, and a Tactical Solutions Ruger Mark III.

The Pendleton safe holds lots of guns and allows for very easy access to the collection. The Gunblast King and Bishop series models include lights, dehumidifier, and a locking bolt indicator on the King.  The bright white interior allows one to find his guns easily, and the rubber grommets around the cut-outs protect the guns very well indeed.

The Pendleton Bishop series guns safe here features the almost indestructible PPS finish.  This finish is similar to the very popular Rhino liners sprayed in truck beds.  This model features the black 3-prong handle and the S&G lockset.  The round configuration is home in any location, even a corner.

The Bishop's interior on this model is not lit, nor does it have the electric rotating shelves or the dehumidifier package.  However, all other features are the same.  The knobs allow for easy turning of the shelves and the spacing allows for maximum gun storage with very easy extraction.

The Bishop series showing only 2 guns inside, the new Anderson Manufacturing Gunblast.com edition Counter Sniper in digital camo and M4 in black.  Note that very short guns, such as the M4 carbine, can be placed with the stock on the bottom pad instead of within the cutouts to allow an easy fit.  All other guns were removed to show the safe configuration.  Lots of guns can be put into this safe, and the shelving, as with all Pendleton safes, are modular for a wide-variety of configurations.

A good gun room combination at an affordable price.  A Pendleton Bishop safe shown here in the tough PPS finish, along with ample shelving, storage containers, and a Campbell rotating gun rack.  Both the Pendleton gun safe and the Campbell gun rack feature rotating storage for ease of use.  Greg uses the Campbell gun rack (www.gun-racks.com) to hold guns he removes from his gun safes prior to and after cleaning, and before returning to storage. The magnets beneath the felt holds the barrels in place to prevent guns from falling off the rack.

Boge's King 3272, prototype of the "Boge Quinn Pistolero" model, features eight shelves with eighteen spaces per shelf, for a total of 144 spaces. Shelf spacing allows for additional handguns and accessories to be stored flat, making the true useable capacity closer to 180 handguns. Solid bottom shelf can be used for accessories, ammo, knives, etc.
