John McCain is Right for Americaby Dave Skowron September 24, 2008 You know, there was a time when I didn't think John McCain would make a good president. But that was before I learned more about him. After hearing
Fred Thompson speak at the republican National Convention, I remembered a book I read when I first joined the Air Force back in 1975. The book was based on McCain's experience in Hanoi. I had forgotten all about it. If I remember correctly, the book didn't name names. It simply delivered the story of his 5 plus years in the hell hole. If I also remember correctly, it was written by one of the guys in the prison with McCain. At the time, I was on a mission to learn everything I could about the Vietnam war because I didn't know if the war was going to end or not. So I read every book I could find and hung out with all the older GI's I could who would let me. Anyway, I digress. I remember being totally awestruck by the story of this man's courage and strength. Hell, every bone in his body was broken at one time or another. Right out of the plane both arms, a leg, several ribs, and a shoulder were smashed. He never got proper attention for any of his wounds, and they beat him, starved him, tortured him in unspeakable ways, for five and a half years. I remember the guy in the book declining release. I remember that he had all his teeth knocked out for trying to talk to the guy in the cell next to him. It goes on and on. Dave Skowron
