Calipornia: Gun Shows Are Naughty but Smut Shows Are Nice

Out on the Left Coast, Democrat foes of the Second Amendment want to ban gun shows from a taxpayer-owned property but keep allowing a porn expo.

"Foreplay got the nod over gunplay Wednesday by state senators deciding what types of shows to allow at the Cow Palace," the San Francisco Chronicle reported today.

California Sen. Jackie Speier is having a cow over firearms shows at the Cow Palace in suburban Daly City.

Democrats defeated attempts by Republicans to amend Speier's bill to ban the annual Exotic Erotic Ball as well.

Exotic Erotic Ball, which touts itself as "the world's wildest and sexiest party," says in advertising for "entertainers": "Can you tie yourself into a pretzel? Have you ever spent a major holiday being impaled? Did you ever run off to join the circus and get rejected?"

Sen. Bill Morrow, a Republican from San Diego County, reminded his colleagues, "You are voting to keep live sex acts in a state facility going on."

Senate President Pro Tem John Burton of San Francisco shot back, "I've never heard of any kids on a playground killed by a live sex act."

However, GOP Sen. Dennis Hollingsworth of Riverside County noted that two people had died at a rave at the Cow Palace in January. He asked Speier whether any gun show there had ever caused a death.

"Are we concerned about rave parties at the Cow Palace? No, we're not," Hollingsworth said. "This is an ideological battle, using the power of the state to take away the rights of people doing something completely legal."

In the end, La-La Land's Senate Democrats got their way and passed Speier's bill. If the Assembly approves it, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger must decide whether to sign or veto it.
